Silage Production Procedures
Silage is the product of the controlled fermentation of green fodder. The plant material should have sufficient moisture content, which is normally required to be between 50% and 60 percent.
This is dependent on how it is to be stored and specifically the amount of water that will be lost in storage. The plant material is chopped into very small pieces with a forage harvester and then stored in silos or pits'.
There are various ways in which it may be stored. One option is to put the silage in massive piles and drive over them with a tractor to squeeze out each the atmosphere, after which it's wrapped in vinyl covers which are held down with tires.
Another option is for the silage to be baked and wrapped in vinyl. There are different ways of doing this, with bales found in all sorts of different shapes and sizes.
Silage can be used to feed dairy cattle, beef cattle, horses and sheep. It can also be utilized as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion – to produce biogas.
