Know About Types of Dementia

There are many different types of dementia treatments available, and what works for one person may not work for another. It's important to work with your doctor to find a treatment plan that's right for you.

There are seven types of dementia, each with its own causes and symptoms. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. It affects mostly older adults, and its symptoms include memory loss, confusion, and problems with speaking and writing.

Vascular dementia is the second most common type of dementia, accounting for 10 to 20 percent of cases. It occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, damaging brain tissue. Its symptoms include memory loss, confusion, and problems with movement.

Lewy body dementia is the third most common type of dementia, accounting for 5 to 10 percent of cases. It occurs when abnormal proteins called Lewy bodies build up in the brain and interfere with nerve cell function. Its symptoms include memory loss, hallucinations, and problems with movement.

Frontotemporal dementia is the fourth most common type of dementia, accounting for 5 to 10 percent of cases. It occurs when nerve cells in the frontal lobe of the brain deteriorate. Its symptoms include changes in personality and behavior, as well as problems with speaking and swallowing.

Parkinson’s disease dementia is the fifth most common type of dementia, accounting for 5 to 10 percent of cases. It occurs when people have both Parkinson’s disease (a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement) and dementia (memory loss and cognitive decline). Its symptoms include memory loss, confusion, and problems with movement.
